Emerge #2, 24″ x 30″ oil on canvas. framed white satin finish 1 7/8″ depth, painting is regular depth canvas. (3/4″)
In the Emerge series, I explored the concept of one idea, the simple notion of a grey horse walking towards the viewer. It began with a series of sketches, drafting lines of a horse, each attempt evolving from the previous.
Using a fairly large canvas gave me the room to use various tools other than a paintbrush to apply and mix paint directly on the canvas. This gave me a full range of motion of my arm to accentuate movement in the step stride as well as her tail. Emerge #2, differs from #1 as I expanded on the palette, reflecting more colours back into the horse. I concentrated on mid-values for the right of her body, and saved the highest values, or her highlights, from her face, cascading down her topline toward her hindquarters. The slight tilt to her head gives character and expression while balancing the composition with the swish of her tail. There is an overall flow to the painting.
It is a great complement to have visitors in my studio, who have seen both Emerge #1 & #2 in person, remark on how they feel a connection to the equine subject as if she is stepping out of the canvas, towards themselves, the viewer.
This painting was juried into Emerald Art Center National Spring Exhibition, Springfield, Oregon and is now available for viewing and purchase at Equis Art Gallery, Red Hook, New York.
