Description
Cadence I, 11″ x 14″ oil on canvas panel.
Over the past few months, I have been immersed in a series of online abstract workshops created by California-based artist Melinda Cootsona. I went into these courses looking to expand my comfort zone working abstractly. Melinda’s classes also include snippets about the history and evolution of abstract art that I found quite interesting.
Out of this came two new paintings (so far!) Cadence I & II incorporate a couple of new-to-me teachings utilizing the ideas of Patterning and Contrast of Values. I have used the patterning of abstract shapes to enhance and accentuate the movement of the horse. The contrast of colours close in value creates a vibration to the eye, also adding interest and creating pathways for the eye.
I found it to be quite interesting how a small shift in value in one section, would instantly affect another area. It seemed the tweaking would go on endlessly! Eventually, when I reached a point of feeling like I had tinkered every section out, I was able sign the painting and call it complete. I hope you enjoy these new explorations.
The model for these two paintings is Finya, aks “Just Watch Me” Westphalian by Freestyle out of a Pacific Sunset mare, Island Farm, Vancouver Island, Canada.
This painting is available through Equis Art Gallery, Red Hook, New York.
