Chelsea Series and New Auction Paintings

I am continuing to work through a new series featuring a thoroughbred mare named Chelsea I introduced in my last post. After my life references and photo session, I retreat to the studio and begin examining and studying from all angles. I particularly love side profiles because while they are simple, they are never flat. Very distinct characteristics are inherent to each horse. The profile, ears, topline, eye shape/folds. etc….a horse really isn’t just a horse.

From here, more ideas start to flow. I am also exploring her figure/values/palette so they become second nature, then an intuitive painting process can start to flow effortlessly. Here in #II, I incorporated the thought of movement utilizing oil bar pigment sticks in a sweeping motion, accentuating her forward step. Some texture work in the upper left corner balance the image.

To explain further on my process, I’d like to mention this is not commission work, however the model owner does (and has in this case) the opportunity to purchase the work. At this time, I am no longer working in a traditional commission format. After almost 20 years, much of it commission-driven, I longed to expand my portfolio and run with ideas. I also love to work in a series and I have found commission work often limited to one painting. After that one painting, there are so many more ideas to be had and expanded upon. The subjects I paint I meet in person, which is crucial to my process not just for life study, but it is often the story of the horse that influences the series as well. There are many mutual perks to make this process work, if you have a horse you would be interested in being featured please contact me directly for more information. BTW – I do love to travel and I love to hear about inspirational stories of unique horse relationships.
